Just speculating that this is a common synthesizer tone/noise modulation... seems like a few bands used it back then. Maybe Emerson Lake & Palmer for example. Phil liked noises.

I thought it might be an organ effect.
I had a tape back in the day with the jet type sound on the Unbroken Chain and I figured it was just something wrong with the tape itself but my wife bought me a best of CD and it has the same sound on the tune and it occurs more than once during the song. (and there is zero info on the CD about any of the tunes) So I assuming they are pulled from the original studio albums.

I recently listened to an interview with Jerry where he gets asked about that song... he specifically stated that they used an ARP Odyssey synth.

You have to then wonder why they didn't play it live between June and October '74 given that Ned was then on tour with the band. We can only wish...
